DataCore Releases Sixth Annual Survey

DataCore Releases Sixth Annual Survey

DataCore has announced the results of its sixth annual survey, designed to explore the impact of major software-driven storage deployments within organizations across the globe. The survey distills the positive expectations, disappointments, and experiences of 426 IT professionals who are currently using or evaluating software-defined storage, hyperconverged and cloud storage to solve critical data storage challenges. The results yielded surprising insights from a cross-section of industries over a wide range of workloads.

The survey probed for levels of spending on technologies including software-defined storage, flash technology, hyperconverged storage, private cloud storage and OpenStack. Software-defined storage topped the charts in 2017 spending, with 16% reporting that software-defined storage represented 11-25% of their allocated budget, and 13% representing that it made up more than 25% of their allocated budget for storage (the highest of any category). Unexpectedly, the findings showed that very little funding is being earmarked in 2017 for much-hyped technologies such as OpenStack storage, with 70% of respondents marking it “not applicable.”

The report also reveals major business drivers for implementing software-defined storage. The top business drivers that participants reported for implementing software-defined storage were:

  • To simplify management of different models of storage: 55%
  • To future-proof infrastructure: 53%
  • To avoid hardware lock-in from storage manufacturers: 52%
  • To extend the life of existing storage assets: 47%
  • Only 6% of those surveyed said they were not considering a move to software-defined storage.

One of the more interesting questions asked — “What technology disappointments or false starts have you encountered in your storage infrastructure?” — revealed the following top three answers:

  • Cloud storage failed to reduce costs: 31%
  • Managing object storage is difficult: 29%
  • Flash failed to accelerate applications: 16%

Also noteworthy is that the top two environments that respondents believe experience the most severe performance challenges (where storage is suspected to be the root cause) are databases and enterprise applications (ERP, CRM, etc.). The need for faster databases and data analytics is driving new requirements for technologies that optimize performance and meet demand for real-time responses. This is critical for business insights and to power technologies such as the Internet of Things. However, many feel that current technologies designed to accelerate performance and decrease latency also bring along significant disruptions to existing applications, greater complexity and higher costs.

Additional highlights of DataCore’s sixth annual survey include:

  •  A look at the current state of hyperconverged infrastructure, including lower than expected deployment numbers. A majority of respondents stated they were either not considering hyperconverged at all (33%) or were strongly considering it but haven’t deployed it yet (34%). 20% of respondents said that they have a few nodes; 7% are in major deployment(s), while only 6% are standardized on it.
  • As prevalent as flash has become, only a small number of respondents reported a large amount of storage capacity assigned to it. About 60% of respondents fell within the category of having less than 10% to 20% of total capacity assigned to flash.
  • In looking at applications deemed ready for a hybrid cloud infrastructure, the primary types of applications users are willing to move to a public cloud or hybrid cloud infrastructure were select enterprise applications (i.e. Salesforce): 33%, data analytics: 22%; and databases: 21%.

F5 Delivers Application Services For A Multi-Cloud World

F5 Delivers Application Services For A Multi-Cloud World

F5 Networks has announced the availability of offerings designed to provide consistent application services in multi-cloud environments — giving companies greater deployment flexibility, more effective security, and faster time to market.

F5’s 2017 State of Application Delivery report shows that while more customers than ever are shifting to cloud infrastructures, many are consciously choosing to invest in multiple cloud technologies. Eighty percent of survey respondents report that they are committed to multi-cloud architectures, and 20% state that they will have over half their applications running in the public and/or private clouds this year. With this move to leverage multi-cloud environments, unexpected hurdles often present themselves: application deployments across multiple cloud platforms create challenges in managing application services; inconsistent security policies create compliance risks; and multiple cloud architectures put more pressure on IT skills gaps, and diminish the return on the cloud’s value.

“Customers are increasingly choosing to deploy applications in multiple clouds — public and private, in colocation facilities, and in their own data centers — but are struggling with the management of different development environments, tool sets, and orchestration technologies,” said Sangeeta Anand, SVP of Product Management and Product Marketing at F5. “Where these clouds provide services for applications, they often do so in ways that are not portable enough, are use-case specific, or provide inadequate protection. F5’s portfolio of multi-cloud application services and solutions gives customers the freedom to deploy any application — anywhere — with consistent application services and enterprise-grade security.”

Extending the Reach of Applications and the Cloud

In November, F5 shared its vision to power intelligent application services in the cloud with the stability, security, and performance customers expect. Today, we build on that foundation with the broad availability of solutions for multi-platform, multi-cloud services that make applications go faster, smarter, and safer.

New public cloud solutions help deploy applications faster in any cloud

F5 BIG-IP Virtual Edition in the Google Cloud means that organizations can now deploy F5 services in all major public clouds. F5 gives customers greater choices of cloud platforms, with new ‘bring your own license’ offers for instances ranging from 25 Mbps to 5 Gbps. Available now from Google Cloud Launcher in Good, Better, and Best versions.

Cloud solution templates for Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google reduce the complexity of deploying F5 services for applications in the public cloud. These new solution-specific templates simplify and automate common public cloud use cases. Cloud solution templates are also available for OpenStack private cloud environments. Available now on GitHub.

Integrated marketplace solutions provide easily accessible, pre-packaged F5 services such as WAF and Office 365 federated access that are deployable directly from public cloud marketplaces, meaning companies can leverage their trusted F5 services easily for applications in the cloud. Available now in the Azure Marketplace.

New private cloud solutions enable organizations to move to the cloud faster and with more confidence

A private cloud solution package gets customers up and running quickly with pre-tested, certified, and bundled F5 solutions that simplify and automate OpenStack private cloud deployments. Available now through F5 sales.

Broad line of additional solutions deliver application services in new environments

Lightweight Application Services Proxy gives customers flexibility in developing, testing, and scaling applications in container environments. Available now at Docker Store.

Container Connector provides the easy deployment of app services in containerized environments, and simple integration of capabilities into management/orchestration systems including Kubernetes and Mesos/Marathon. Available now at GitHub and Docker Hub.

Application Connector inserts application services from the edge of the public cloud and securely connects any public cloud provider to the customer’s interconnection or data center. In the case of AWS, Application Connector can automatically discover workloads for application services insertion. Available now through F5 sales.

“Business executives are beginning to rely heavily on cloud solutions in support of their digital transformation efforts, but in many cases, single cloud deployments are insufficient to enable true business agility,” said Zeus Kerravala, Principal Analyst at ZK Research. “Unfortunately, multi-cloud frameworks are complex and IT must take the steps needed to mitigate the challenges of operating in these mixed worlds. With F5’s multi-cloud portfolio of products, IT can deliver consistent and secure application services in any environment needed for business velocity.”

IBM And Nutanix Launch Hyperconverged Initiative

IBM And Nutanix Launch Hyperconverged Initiative

IBM and Nutanix have announced a multi-year initiative to bring new workloads to hyperconverged deployments.

The integrated offering aims to combine Nutanix’s Enterprise Cloud Platform software with IBM Power Systems, to deliver a turnkey hyperconverged solution targeting critical workloads in large enterprises. The partnership plans to deliver a full-stack combination with built-in AHV virtualization for a simple experience within the data center.

In today’s technology landscape, processing real-time information is necessary but not sufficient. Being able to react in real-time used to give enterprises a competitive advantage, but this approach no longer guarantees happy customers. The value has now migrated to the ability to rapidly gather large amounts of data, quickly crunch and predict what’s likely to happen next — using a combination of analytics, cognitive skills, machine learning, and more. This is the start of the insight economy.

Handling these kinds of workloads present unique challenges — needing a combination of reliable storage, fast networks, scalability, and extremely powerful computing. It seems like private datacenters that were designed just a few years ago are due for a refresh — not only in the technology, but also in the architectural design philosophy. This is where the combination of IBM Power Systems and Nutanix comes in.

  • Next generation cognitive workloads, including big data, machine learning and AI
  • Mission-critical workloads, such as databases, large scale data warehouses, web infrastructure, and mainstream enterprise apps
  • Cloud Native Workloads, including full stack open source middleware and enterprise databases and containers

With a shared philosophy based on open standards, a combination of Nutanix and IBM will be designed to bring out the true power of software-defined infrastructure – choice — for global 2000 enterprises, with plans for:

  • A simplified private enterprise cloud that delivers POWER architecture in a seamless and compatible way to the data center
  • Exclusive virtualization management with AHV, advanced planning and remediation with Machine Learning, App Mobility, Microsegmentation and more, with one-click automation
  • A fully integrated one-click management stack with Prism, to eliminate silos and reduce the need for specialized IT skills to build and operate cloud-driven infrastructure
  • Deploying stateful cloud native services using Acropolis Container Services with automated deployment and enterprise-class persistent storage

“Hyperconverged systems continue on a rapid growth trajectory, with a market size forecast of nearly $6 billion by 20201. IT teams now recognize the need, and the undeniable benefits, of embracing the next generation of datacenter infrastructure technology,” said Stefanie Chiras, VP Power Systems at IBM. “Our partnership with Nutanix will be designed to give our joint enterprise customers a scalable, resilient, high-performance hyperconverged infrastructure solution, benefiting from the data and compute capabilities of the POWER architecture and the one-click simplicity of the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform.”

“With this partnership, IBM customers of Power-based systems will be able to realize a public cloud-like experience with their on premise infrastructure,” said Dheeraj Pandey, CEO at Nutanix. “With the planned design, Enterprise customers will be able to run any mission critical workload, at any scale, with world-class virtualization and automation capabilities built into a scale out fabric leveraging IBM’s server technology.”
